With the 100-year anniversary of the construction of Lake Worth coming in 2014, local arborist and horticulturist Wes Culwell has set out on a mission to document the largest trees around the lake. In fact, he will name the three largest trees in each of the thirty species around the huge pond of water. This survey will name size-champions in each of the different types. Culwell says they are also looking for unusual or odd trees as well.
“Tree surveys are being made of each of the parks located around the lake,” said Culwell who graduated from Texas A&M. “We are also identifying trees in each of the historic spots near the lake.”
Culwell is looking for help from the general public as well.
“There were restaurants, stores, dance halls, and boat and cabin rental places all along the lake,” Culwell said. “We want to hear about any trees in these forgotten places that were once so important to Lake Worth life.”
You many send any information to wes.culwell@yahoo.com or 817-246-8197. The tree survey information is expected to be completed before the end of this year. A book containing the tree information will be published by the centennial celebration of Lake Worth.
