This Weekend at the Theater

Three new movies will be releasing this weekend, with one getting major Oscar buzz.  That film is Zero Dark Thirty, the movie about the hunt for and ultimately the finding of Osama Bin Laden.  The movie has zealous supporters and detractors, with some praising it as brilliant while others claim it’s a completely false interpretation of real world events.  Either way, it’s sure to draw an audience and will have people talking when it hits theaters on Friday.

The next new release is the period action film Gangster Squad.  Starring Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone and Sean Penn, this movie tells the story of a small group of police officers who go to war with gangster Mickey Cohen in 1940’s Los Angeles.  Trailers filled with hip music and flashy scenes of gunfights will assure this one pulls in a strong male audience, but it’s hard to say how wide reaching the appeal of this film is, even with such a highly skilled cast.

The final new release of the weekend is A Haunted House.  This spoof film is in the vein of the Scary Movie franchise and endeavors to poke fun at movies like Paranormal Activity.  These films are always extremely over the top, and the quality varies wildly from spoof to spoof.
