Last week, some eagle-eyed locals spotted an online article from the Killeen Daily Herald that had implications right here in the White Settlement area. Brewer Head Coach Paul Sharr was named in the article as one of three finalists for the Head Coach/Athletic Coordinator position of Ellison High School, which is a part of the Killeen Independent School District.
According to Killeen Daily Herald reporter Alex Byington, Sharr was among a group of fourteen coaches who interviewed for the position early last week, and one of just three who moved on to the final selection. Ultimately, Sharr was not chosen for the position.
Despite not getting the job, Sharr’s involvement in seeking employment elsewhere had people who live in the White Settlement Independent School District asking questions. The Grizzly Detail attempted to get answers from two different sources, sending out interview questions to Sharr and WSISD Superintendent Frank Molinar, but in return received a simple media statement.
The five paragraph statement originated from WSISD Communications Director Desiree Coyle and states it serves as a joint statement from Molinar and Sharr. Unfortunately, it answers none of the questions that were asked of the two men and gives no information that will help those who wish to understand this situation better.
The statement said that it “is the policy of White Settlement ISD not to discuss personnel matters,” and from there went on to speak at length about encouraging participation in athletics, the good things student athletes learn, and the pride student athletes feel by being a part of the athletics programs.
This information did nothing to address concerns that have been coming in from citizens on this issue. Such questions as “Was the WSISD administration aware Sharr was seeking employment elsewhere; What does this situation mean for Sharr’s future with the WSISD; Does this news make it difficult for Sharr to remain a leader in the district, and will Sharr be seeking other employment opportunities all remain unanswered at this time.
Sharr’s current contract with the WSISD runs through July of 2014. Trent Gregory, who was in his third year at Leander Vandegrift as an offensive line coach, was named as head coach of Ellison High School in Killeen.
