The Brewer Bears varsity basketball team had a fruitful week as they picked up victories against Wichita Falls and Wichita Falls Rider. Against Wichita Falls last week, Taro Ford and Dylan Vilaros each had 19 points as the Bears recovered from a slow start in the game to go on to a 61 – 59 victory.
Against Wichita Falls Rider, the Bears were firmly in control for the entire game as they cruised to a 56 – 36 victory. Leading scorers in this contest were Garrick Reynolds with 17, Josh Waters with 14, and Taro Ford with 13.
The two victories move Brewer to 5 wins, 4 losses in district play, but more importantly, they further maneuver the squad into sole possession of the fourth and final playoff spot. The Bears have a good cushion between themselves and fifth place now, and with four games remaining in the season should be able to hold onto the spot.
Of the final four games, three of them are against the top three teams in the district. Brewer is 0 and 3 against those teams so far this season. Finishing out the schedule 1 and 3 could still find the Bears heading to the playoffs, but they’ll be looking for at least one upset over those top teams in order to ensure a trip to the postseason.
The Bears are in action at home Friday night against Denton. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m., so be sure to come out and support the team as they make the final push towards the playoffs.
