Brewer picked up an essential win over Azle last week, putting them in good position as they headed into a contest against one of the district leaders on Friday night. The last time Brewer took on Denton this season, they lost by 24 points. On Friday, they lost by just 4, showing just how much growth this squad has had in recent weeks as they surge towards the postseason.
One reason the Bears have seen more success is the emergence of Taro Ford, who has become one of the team’s leading scorers in the second half of the district season. Ford was once again atop the stat sheet on Friday, as he lead all Brewer scorers with 15 points in the game. Cameron Brown had 14, while Garrick Reynolds had 10.
Brewer and Denton traded big punches and counterpunches in the second and third quarters. The Bears were dominant in the second, outscoring Denton by 6 to take a 28 – 24 lead into halftime.
The third quarter belonged to Denton, as they outscored Brewer by 7 to retake the lead. The teams played neck and neck in the final quarter, but ultimately Denton pulled out the win 61 – 57.
The loss doesn’t impact the Bears postseason chances much. The team could almost certainly lose the rest of the games on their schedule and still make the playoffs at this point. But with the momentum the team has built in recent weeks, it’s safe to say this squad is heading into the playoffs playing their best ball of the year.
There are just two games left in the regular season, and one of those will take place Friday night at BHS. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m., so come out and cheer on the Bears as they look to lock up their playoff spot.
