Brewer athlete finalist in Davey O’Brien High School award

Four area high school athletes will have a chance at a $30,000 scholarship when the Davey O’Brien High School award is announced today.

Spencer Crawford of White Settlement Brewer, Eric Getz of Fort Worth All Saints, Melody Rodriguez from Fort Worth Country Day, and Christine Vonder Haar of Fort Worth Paschal were named finalists Thursday.

Ashlyn Hoenshelt of Rockwall-Heath is also up for the award.

The winner will be announced Jan. 20 during the eighth annual Davey O’Brien High School Scholarship Luncheon at The Fort Worth Club. The four finalists who don’t win still will receive a $2,500 scholarship.

All five finalists are standout varsity athletes and rank at or near the top of their classes academically.

Crawford, a varsity tennis and basketball player for Brewer, ranks first out of 357 students with a 4.0 GPA. Getz, a four-year varsity football player, carries a 99.68 GPA out of 100 at All Saints and was a National Merit semifinalist.

Rodriguez and Vonder Haar are also National Merit semifinalists, with Rodriguez carrying a 98.84 GPA out of 100 and Vonder Haar ranking second out of 576 students with a 4.693 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Vonder Haar was first named captain of the Paschal girls basketball team during the 2013-14 season, her first season on varsity.

Rodriguez has earned eight varsity letters in three sports, including swimming, which she set three school records.
