The Brewer Bears are having a dominant season as they continue to work their way through opponents and remain at or near the top of the district standings. That dominance continued through nearly the entire game Tuesday night against the Denton Broncos. Brewer moved the ball with ease, setting up and hitting good shots for the entire first half. Up by 12 at halftime, the Bears were poised to add another victory to their impressive district record.
But things slowly fell apart for the team in the second half. The Broncos went on a 10 – 2 scoring run to open up the third quarter, pulling within 4 points. The Bears responded, re-opening a 10 point lead just a few minutes later. But the Broncos hung around, determined to make a game of it. Heading into the fourth quarter Brewer led 49 – 43.
The Brewer team in the second half wasn’t nearly as sharp as the one that took the court in the first half. The offense was out of sync and some ball handling issues limited their ability to score. Denton continued to inch ever closer, and with three minutes left in the game the Broncos took their first lead of the night.
Down by 3 with just thirty seconds remaining, Brewer turned to one of their pinpoint shooters. Alex Bagg drained a deep three point shot to even the score and send the Brewer faithful into a frenzy. However, a quick Denton score gave them a 2 point lead with just six seconds left in the game. The Bears put together a nice play to give themselves a shot to win the game, but the shot didn’t fall. The final score was Denton 59, Brewer 57.
This marks just the second district loss for the Bears who move to 6 wins, 2 losses in district play. The team still holds a strong position in the district standings and with less than a month left in the season the Bears remain a big post season contender. Brewer will be back in action at home on Friday night against Boswell. Tipoff is set for 7:30.
