When the book is closed on the 2015 Brewer football season, the game against Denton will be one fans will surely remember. Facing one of the most explosive offenses in the district, the Bears stayed in control and in the lead for almost the entirety of the game. It was a hard fought battle, and one that was heartbreaking to see the Bears lose.
The game started off on a sour note for the Bears, as they fumbled the first play of the game. Denton recovered the fumble and scored a touchdown, taking an early 6 – 0 lead. The Bears didn’t let the mistake derail them, answering with a balanced drive that saw both run and pass plays find success. The end result was a touchdown and a Brewer lead of 7 – 6.
Denton responded with a nice drive of their own. Their star running back Xavier Scott proved to be a formidable opponent, breaking free for some large gains. However, the Bears eventually found a way to stop him, and Denton was forced to settle for a field goal. This put them back in the lead 9 – 7.
Once again, the Bears showed incredible diversity as they got the ball back. Quarterback Brian Kueck completed some key passes as running back Jameson Carson ran the ball well. Brewer scored a touchdown and re-took a lead that they would hold until late into the fourth quarter.
As the first quarter started to wind down, Denton had some more big runs but again had to settle for a field goal. It would be the last time Scott had any impact on the game until the fourth quarter.
For their part, Brewer continued to play well. They had another fumble, but made up for it with some outstanding special teams play. After forcing Denton to punt, Brewer swarmed the punter and blocked the kick, sending it into the endzone for a safety.
After going down multiple times with an injury last week, Brewer’s star running back Carson was having a fantastic game into the second quarter. However, he once again went down with an injury. As he did last week, backup Tre’ Johnson filled in admirably, showing off his speed and elusiveness as he helped the team score another touchdown to widen their lead to 23 – 12.
The defense continued to do their part, coming up with an interception to give the ball right back to the Bears. This time it was Kueck with the big play as he completed a 43 yard pass to Brian Lopez for a touchdown. That made it Brewer 30, Denton 12.
As halftime approached, Denton was able to stop the bleeding slightly, scoring on a 40 yard pass that made it Brewer 30, Denton 19 at the half.
Denton scored another touchdown as the third quarter got underway, this one a 52 yard pass. That made it just a 4 point game at Brewer 30, Denton 26.
With the momentum swinging the wrong direction, the Brewer offense answered with a beautiful drive that chewed up nearly 8 minutes of game clock. Carson returned to the field and had some of his signature runs as he continually found a way to gain yardage. The play of the offensive line has been stellar all year, and they again were in fine form as they opened up holes and lanes for Carson. Brewer capped off the drive with a short touchdown run that made it Brewer 37, Denton 26.
Denton’s offensive momentum continued to build, however, and they answered with a touchdown drive of their own. That once again made it a 4 point game at 37 – 33.
With the fourth quarter getting underway, Carson went down with an injury for the second time in the game. That makes it two weeks in a row for Carson to go down multiple times in a game with some sort of injury. The Bears put together a long drive, but facing a fourth down play they were unable to convert and turned over the ball on downs. It would prove to be the opening Denton had been waiting for.
After being held in check for over two quarters, Xavier Scott exploded in the fourth quarter. Facing a fourth down play, Scott broke free for a 58 yard run that put Denton in scoring position. They would score a few plays later to take the lead and make it Brewer 33, Denton 40.
Facing a do or die drive, Brewer began moving the ball down the field well. Carson was back on the field, but when a Kueck pass was intercepted it spelled the end of the road for Brewer. Denton would go on to add one more touchdown as the final score was Brewer 37, Denton 47.
After dominating for much of the game, the loss was a tough one for the Bears. Carson finished the night with 233 yards rushing on 35 attempts. Kueck completed 8 of his 12 passes for 117 yards, with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Denton’s Xavier Scott finished the game with 273 yards rushing on 21 attempts.
A win in this game would’ve put the Bears in a prime spot to make a playoff run. The loss means they’ve still got some work cut out for them in the weeks ahead. Still, their 2 wins, 1 loss record has them in a 4 way tie for second place in the district. The Bears haven’t faced any of the teams they’re tied with yet, which puts their playoff fate firmly in their own hands.
The team is back at home this Friday night as they take on Boswell. Kickoff is at 7:00 pm.
