When the softball and baseball teams of Brewer High School next step on the field, they’ll feel an unfamiliar substance under their cleats. Turf is being installed at the softball and baseball fields in preparation for the 2016 season. This $1.4 million project was approved by the WSISD Board of Trustees in November with a completion date set for mid-January.
The switch to turf is expected to create more than $700,000 in savings over the next ten years as it allows the district to avoid costs such as maintenance, labor, equipment, fertilizer, top seed, and water. It will also allow athletes to avoid so much lost time due to rain. Last year alone, the softball and baseball programs at BHS missed a combined 28 days of practice and were forced to cancel some pre-season games due to poor field conditions following storms.
