The mother of two young girls who were found dead Thursday inside their Benbrook home is now being held on two capital murder warrants, police announced this week.
Sofya Tsygankova remains hospitalized at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth with what officials are now calling self-inflicted stab wounds.
The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office had not determined the exact cause of death of the girls — Nika Kholodenko, 5, and Michela Kholodenko, 1 — but believe they are the result of “homicidal violence.”
“We have probable cause, reason to believe, that she committed the homicides,” said Benbrook Police Cmdr. David Babcock at a news conference.
Bail on each warrant is set at $1 million, Babcock said.
Vadym Kholodenko, the children’s father, called 911 shortly before 9:30 a.m. Thursday after arriving at the house to pick up his two young daughters. He found them dead and his estranged wife wounded.
The Ukranian-born Kholodenko won the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth.
