School hours changing next year for kids

by A.C. Hall

A new piece of state legislature has influenced a change in the hours of operation of White Settlement Independent School District schools for the 2016-2017 school year.  House bill 2610 changed the attendance requirement from 180 days annually to 75,600 minutes annually.  WSISD will shift to a seven and a half hour school day to accommodate this change.  This slight increase in the amount of time spent at school will allow for students to get out for summer one week earlier than they currently do.
For students of Brewer High School, the change in hours allows for a later start to the school day but will see students staying forty minutes longer than they currently do.  Brewer Middle School classes will start twenty-five minutes earlier than they currently do, but students will be released at 3:30 instead of the current time of 3:50.  The campus experiencing the largest shift in start time is the Fine Arts Academy, that will start forty minutes earlier than their current start time of 8:40.  For a full list of the changes, see the list below.
