Two men rob victim in late night transaction, one shot

A man was shot by an off-duty Fort Worth police officer that was searching for a robbery suspect just before midnight on Wednesday.
At 11:55 p.m., police dispatch received a 911 call from the victim of a robbery that occurred in the parking lot of a gas station in west Fort Worth at the intersection of Las Vegas Trail and South Normandale Street. The victim told police that they had agreed to buy an item online and was to meet the seller at the gas station. Two shirtless men arrived, and one pulled out a silver handgun and robbed the victim, they said.
The dispatcher provided officers a description of the suspects and told them at least one was armed with a silver handgun. The dispatcher said the suspects had fled to a nearby apartment complex.
A uniformed FWPD officer and a Tarrant County deputy sheriff who were working together off-duty and driving a FWPD patrol car responded to the call. They drove to the apartment complex northwest of the gas station to help patrol officers locate the suspects.
Within minutes, in the 8700 block of Normandale Street, the off-duty officers spotted a man matching the description of the robbery suspects look in their direction and then duck down behind bushes near the apartment complex’s entrance.
The officers got out of the patrol car as the man began walking away. They asked him to stop and show his hands, one of which, police say, was in his pants pocket. Police say the officers saw the man pull a silver object out of his pants and pointed it at the deputy.
The other officer opened fire on the man, hitting him once in the lower torso. The man dropped the object, which turned out to be a silver box cutter.
The officers began to treat the man’s gunshot wound with their medical kit until paramedics arrived. The man was taken to Harris Methodist Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition.
The officer who shot the man is on paid administrative leave while the incident is under investigation, as is typical following an officer-involved shooting.
There is dashcam video of the incident, but it has not been released to the public at this time.
Currently, no one is facing charges related to the robbery or shooting. The shooting victim and the officers involved have not been identified.
