What an exciting night for the Brewer Bears, starting off their second game of the season with a warm welcome for Officer Matt Pearce alongside the White Settlement Police to be honored by Brewer. Officer Pearce was also given the opportunity for initiating the coin toss, with Brewer receiving the kickoff from the Roos.
Starting with a strong lead, Brewer pushed through Weatherford’s defense, and in no time at all the Bears had a lead of 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. During the second quarter, the Kangaroos came back with two impressive offensive drives scoring two touchdowns and two extra points, tying the game with the Bears 14-14. Toward the end of the first half, a hush went over the Bear fans and players as a pass was made to #3 Oscar Trevino who appeared to suffer an ankle injury during the tackle. Brewer trainers ran to the field to attend to the injured athlete while fellow football players took a knee in respect for their fallen teammate.
During halftime, the field cleared of football and filled with sounds of bands and the Honeycombs.
As the football players rushed the field for the second half, the crowd cheered as the tied teams battled. Back and forth the Bears and Roos fought for the ball, with a number of flags thrown, incomplete passes, and tackles. The Bears finally broke through during the third quarter and scored another touchdown in the fourth giving the Bears a lead of 28-14. The Bears defense hunkered down and did not allow the Weatherford Roos to score again, ending the game with Brewer 28 and Weatherford 14.
Jarrett Morse led the Bears in passing with 12 of 20 completed for 128 yards and 1 touchdown pass. He also carried the ball 15 times for 49 yards and 2 touchdowns. Curtis Taylor carried the ball 18 times for 122 yards and 1 touchdown. Christian Calton carried the ball 18 times for 61 yards and had 1 pass for 1 yard. Jahrad Taylor caught 5 passes for 71 yards and 1 touchdown. The Bears had 23 first downs, punted the ball 5 times, had two fumbles and 5 penalties for 45 yards.
Brewer will next face off with the Centennial Spartans in Burleson, at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 9.
