A short chase ended with an officer-involved shooting in White Settlement Tuesday that left an armed man critically injured, police say.
Lt. Tim Denison with the White Settlement Police Department said during a news conference Tuesday afternoon a marshal with the city tried to stop a driver, identified as David Najera, age 37, for a traffic violation along the 500 block of Meadow Park Drive.
The driver stopped a short distance away along the 100 block of Saddle Road. During the stop the marshal learned the driver had several outstanding warrants and asked the driver to exit the vehicle.
The driver complied, Denison said, but then ran back to the pickup, pulled out a gun and pointed it at himself before getting back behind the wheel and driving away. The marshal followed the driver along several streets and could see the driver holding the gun to his neck. The driver stopped in front of a house along the 600 block of Meadow Park Drive, where police said he got out of the vehicle still holding the weapon.
Denison said the marshal and an assisting White Settlement police officer ordered the man to drop the weapon – when he did not follow the order he was shot by the White Settlement officer.
Officer’s provided first aid until MedStar Ambulance arrived and transported the man to Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth in critical condition.
There were no reports of any injuries to police officers.
The Texas Rangers and Tarrant County Sheriff’s Department are assisting in the investigation.
