More than 150 people attended the 2011 Brewer High School Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony this past Saturday night. Linda Goodger Tucknies, class of 1959; Rick Brown, class of 1990; Ben Fay, class of 1992; the 1967-68 football team; and the 1994 baseball team were inducted this year.
Honorees, inducted for their outstanding achievements in Brewer athletics, were also honored during pre-game of the first home football game on Sept. 9.
Linda Goodger Tucknies was the first female at Brewer High School to be selected as an All-State Player. She was a 1958 3A-5 State Runner Up and was selected to the 1958 2A Girls’ State High School All-Tournament Basketball Team. Tucknies was a member of the Brewerettes girls’ varsity basketball team for three years and was a member of the only girls’ basketball team to ever advance to the State Tournament. Tucknies also played varsity tennis all four years and was a member of the cheerleading squad throughout high school. Tennis captain in 1958, she was also treasurer of the student body her senior year and a member of the Art Club for two years.
Rick “Downtown” Brown was Brewer High School’s 1989-90 All-Around Male Athlete. Brown was captain of the football and basketball teams and he also lettered in track. He was selected 1987-88 Basketball Newcomer of the Year and Brewer High School 3D Award Winner. As the 1989-90 6-4A 1st Team Guard, Brown also earned State Honorable Mention for basketball that year.
As a member of the 1990 Boys’ Basketball Team, which has the most wins and most playoff wins in the history of Brewer boys’ basketball, Brown scored the winning basket in the Bi-District Championship game against Burkburnett.
He was a member of the 1989-1990 District and Bi-District Champion Football Team, which advanced further than any other football team in Brewer history. Brown was named the 1989-1990 District 6-4A MVP and 1st Team Tarrant County Defensive Back.
Brown earned a scholarship to play football at the University of Alabama, where his team won the 1992 NCAA National Championship.
Ben Fay was the 1992 Brewer High School Valedictorian and was an all-around athlete who lettered in baseball, basketball, track and football.
As a four-year letterman in baseball, Fay was named All-District Catcher all four years. The 1988 District Newcomer of the Year, Fay was selected 1990 and 1991 All-County. The 1991 District MVP and ’91 All-Area Player, Fay hit .486 and had four home runs, nine doubles, 20 RBIs, and 26 runs scored. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1992.
As a member of the 1989-1990 Bi-District Champion Brewer Basketball Team, Fay played basketball for two years, and he earned the designation of 1990-91 District Defensive Player of the Year.
As quarterback of the Brewer Football Team for three years, Fay had a record of 28-5-2. He was the 1989 All-Tarrant County 1st Team Quarterback, All-Tarrant County Sophomore of the Year and 2nd Team All-Tarrant County. Named All-District Quarterback in 1989, 1990 and 1991, Fay was selected as the 1991 All-District Punter and 1990 District MVP.
In 1989, he finished second in the state in passing yardage, and in 1989, he completed 96 of 181 passes for 1,775 yards. He had 16 touchdowns passes, threw eight interceptions, and had 320 yards rushing.
He earned a football scholarship to Texas Tech University and was later appointed into the US Naval Academy where he played football from 1994 to 1996. Team Captain and Quarterback in 1995 and 1996, Fay was the prestigious Thompson Cup Trophy Winner and the Rip Miller Leadership Award winner. The team won the 1996 Aloha Bowl Championship, where he was selected as the 1995 Chevy Player of the Game vs. Notre Dame.
He threw for over 1500 yards, threw seven passes for touchdowns, and ran for eight touchdowns. Upon graduation, he served as an officer in the Navy and flew communications planes for nuclear subs. He is currently a reserve officer for the Navy and is employed by Southwest Airlines as a pilot.
1967-1968 Football Team
The only team to win a District Championship in football during the first 30 years of Brewer history, the 1967 football team was undefeated in district play in a district with nine teams. The Bears and Como High played the first integrated football game in Fort Worth on Sept. 23, 1967, with Brewer winning 20-13.
The head coach was Don Walker and assistants were Jerry Kirby, Don Matthews and Charles White. Members of the 1967 football team were: Mike Arnold, Joey Barger, the late Joe Barnett, Benny Benningfield, Gary Cox, Dan Gerth, Roy Goldsmith, Bob Gorson, Bobby Harmon, Frank Hutson, Tommy Ice, Richard Ice, James Ingram, Wayne Johnson, the late Mike Kirkland, Kenneth Laminack, Cleo Lowrance, Terry Mitchell, Robert Newson, Steve Moore, Jim Penry, Jack Pressley, Matthew Seltzer, Mitch Smith, Jerry Speers, Rudy Stallings, Jerry Stanford, Pat Sullivan, John Townley, Ronald Williams and Clayton Wright.
1994 Baseball Team
The District 6-4A Champs, the 1994 baseball team swept Boswell in a best of 3 game series to win the Bi-District Championship. They proceeded to sweep Eastern Hills in a best of 3 game series for the Area Championship. The boys beat Sweetwater in a 1 game series to win the Region Semifinals, but lost to Big Springs in a best of 3 game series during the Regional Finals.
The head coach was John Herrick and assistant coach was Terry Massey. Members of the 1994 baseball team are: Jay Arnold, Matt Chapman, JC Conyers, Adam Erber, Craig Fowles, James Garcia, Chad Hamzy, Aubrey Huff, Jason Keathley, Gregg Keeton, J.R. Lopez, Kim Mask, Ricky Shelhorse, Jason Stockton, Paul Tecci and Jeremy Wander.
Aubrey Huff became a professional baseball player, winning the 2011 World Series with the San Francisco Giants.
